Although Rockland County is one of the smallest counties in New York State, it is home to many state county and town parks and is almost one third parkland.

Rockland County's parks are situated both on the Hudson River and on or near mountainous ridges that preserve the county's shorelines and skylines as forever green. They not only have historic value, preserving old Indian trails and lore, but are also needs-responsive, providing a variety of recreational opportunities for everyone.

These parks provide excellent hiking trails where one may, if you look carefully, encounter a variety of animals such as a Red-Tailed Hawk, Pileated Woodpecker, Barred Owl, the State Bluebird, Deer, Fox or Wild Turkey. In addition to observing diverse animal life, the parks also offer many scenic views. Most of the northwestern boundary of the county runs along the Harriman-Bear Mountain State Parks.
