Publications Project Manager

Description:

Summary

Help us create the high-quality maps and guidebooks that are trusted by trail users throughout the region!

The Publications Project Manager for each specific publication project plays a key role in organizing the project and seeing it through to completion. The duties vary depending on the type of project (especially map versus book) and scope of the project (such as a new publication versus a revision of an existing publication). An effective Project Manager helps the Trail Conference uphold their high standard of maps and guidebooks by leading a team of writers, editors, field checkers, cartographers and others. The Project Manager works with the Publications Committee and will likely manage other volunteers as part of delegating tasks.

Core Responsibilities

  • Book Project Manager: The duties for a book can vary greatly, but they could include developing the scope of a book, setting a budget and deadline, training and managing field checkers, providing support for text and copy editors, writing some supplemental materials, overseeing artwork/map/photo organization, working closely with the book designer, and helping to produce press releases and execute a marketing plan.
  • Map Project Manager: The duties for a map can vary greatly, but they could include developing the scope of the map, helping to obtain and organize GPS trail data, assisting with individual and park reviews, helping to edit and organize map back materials, obtaining printer quotes, producing press releases, and ensuring the map is produced on time and within an approved budget.
  • Delegating Tasks: The Project Manager is not expected to complete all duties by themselves, and they can help recruit volunteers to fill any roles that they may need help filling. The Project Manager would be responsible for working with the Author to identify desired tasks and managing any volunteers who assist with these tasks.
  • Provide Status Reports: Project status should be reported at monthly Publications Committee meetings, and Project Managers are encouraged to participate in these meetings.

Support and Training

If you feel you might not have the necessary skills but are interested in learning, we can help you develop the skills! A Project Manager will be supported by other volunteers of the Publications Committee, who have decades-worth of publications experience, and they welcome volunteers who are interested in contributing to our efforts to produce and market authoritative trail resources for our region! Project management guidelines will also be provided. Assistance will also be provided to find additional volunteers if they are needed to fill any roles for the project.
